Smarter Lubrication

In this article, we will discuss some tips regarding lubricant that will definitely help in better lubrication practices. Most of them are simple practices that can easily be brought into action. In most of the cases we believe that anything that we buy should be cost effective, but we forget to focus on long term benefits of high initial investment such as Performance effectiveness.

It is said that, “ Everything comes with a price”. Obviously we have to pay the price but that can be minimized by taking some smart preventive steps which we have tried to explain in this blog.

1. It’s wise to choose synthetic over mineral even if cost is higher.

Synthetic oil performs 8 to 9 times greater (in terms of service life) as compared to mineral oil. Thus reduces the frequency of lubrication, which ultimately decreases the ideal time of machine. In 21st Century we all are focusing to reduce decomposition burden on environment. Synthetic oil will serve for longer duration, Hence the quantity that needs to be decomposed is reduced.

2. Machine failure/ Energy loss can be reduced by choosing a correct lubricant.

Improper lubricant selection will lead to unnecessary friction between sliding surface.  This gives rise to certain problems such as high starting torque, oil bleeding, increase in energy consumption etc.If proper oil grade is selected, energy consumption would be low and machine will work efficiently.

3. Synthetic oil helps in easier cold start.

What matters in this case is the Pour point, Synthetic oils have lower pour point as compared to that of Mineral oils, Lower the pour point, lesser will be torque required by machine to start.

4. Try to use a grease which has wide range of application.

It’s headache to maintain inventory of variety of products. Every product has a shelf life and it has to be used within that period. Instead it would be wise to use, a grease which can be used for various application. The question then is  which grease ?Use a grease which have additives, temperature in the range of  “- 20 Deg C to 150 deg C”, Oil of Group 1.Such a grease can be used for multipurpose application.

5. Higher the temperature, more frequent should be the lubrication intervals.

We shouldn’t wait until we observe burnt cake like residue. Due to high temperature, oil from the grease start evaporating at higher rate, and later what is left behind is a thickener which eventually gets burned over a period of time. So if lubricated frequently , the problem of grease getting burned, oil getting evaporated can be reduced.

Conclusion
